I was a biomedical equipment maintenance technician in the Air Force. The skills that they taught me directly transitioned to working for ISS Solutions in clinical engineering. I also received management and supervisor training while on active duty. This training has allowed for me to be a better supervisor and director.

What are your hobbies/what do you do for fun?
I enjoy hunting, fishing and working on my own cars.

I have travelled to many countries, but it’s a toss-up between Italy, Greece and Japan as my favorite.

Many other countries visited, England, Spain, France, Italy, Israel, Philippines, Turkey, Diego Garcia (although not technically a country, just a small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean.) Also spent several hours in the airport in Thailand, Japan, and Kenya, so I did not actually consider that a visit… Favorite??? England??? Spain, France and Turkey were all close seconds…

Absolutely. Learning electronics is just the added bonus. Learning how to interact with people, especially those of different cultural and educational backgrounds, is an invaluable skill that only exposure and experience can teach.

Spending time with my grandkids is great. I also enjoy camping.

Unfortunately, propulsion engineering and biomedical engineering are completely different. But I did learn about preventative maintenance principles and scheduling.

Yes, the management and medical equipment service directly relate—same job, in civilian life. Only differences are now it’s for profit, the military service was to protect our warriors and families.

What branch did you serve in and what did you do?
U.S. Army – I was a Pershing Missile Crewman and cross-trained to be a Pershing Missile Programmer/Test Station Operator. Pershing Missiles were intermediate-range ground attack nuclear missiles. My first job was as ground crew for them. The job I cross-trained into was the programmer and countdown computer operator for them. When we were on Combat Alert for our three months each year, I would have three missiles under my control with live warheads ready to launch in 30 minutes.

I enlisted for and served two years.

I served my entire enlistment after basic & advanced training in Neckarsulm, West Germany. My basic & advanced training were in Fort Sill, OK. Germany was MUCH nicer than Fort Sill!

I am a Sr. Biomedical Technician at the Penn Highlands Healthcare System.

Other than basic (very basic) computer skills from the seriously antiquated system I operated in the army, there really isn’t much.

What are your hobbies/what do you do for fun?
I have been an avid motorcyclist since 1980, when I rented a motorcycle for weekend passes during training. I am active in American Bikers Aimed Toward Education (ABATE) of PA, was active for 13 years in ABATE’s sister organization in MO, and am former National Secretary and National Vice President of the Vulcan Riders Association USA. I also work on remodeling the house that I share with my wife.

U.S. Marine Corps. My original primary MOS was a Field Wireman, which involves the configuration and support of wired telephone systems. When I deployed to Iraq, I was retrained and assigned a secondary MOS, Personnel Retrieval and Processing Specialist, which was previously referred to as Mortuary Affairs and involved the search, recovery, and processing of deceased allied personnel.

I deployed to Iraq in 2006 and trained in South Korea in 2007.

None of my MOS specific skills relate very much to my job today, but there are plenty of leadership and life skills that are relevant to my job and broadly across many aspects of my life.

What are your hobbies/what do you do for fun?
I enjoy learning how to make and do things. In the last few years, I’ve begun making my own wine, roasting coffee, making ultralight camping stoves, custom building firearms, and making quadcopters. I have a 7-year-old son that is in soccer and scouts, and I enjoy participating in those activities with him.

Absolutely! I trained in biomedical equipment repair and was fortunate enough to spend my last 9 years servicing x-ray systems.

Army, Signal Support Systems Specialist. I was responsible for maintaining the communications systems that allowed the commanders and soldiers to communicate via radio on the battlefield.

I was stationed at Fort Benning, GA for my entire enlistment. However, I was deployed to Kuwait for 6 months and came home for a month. I was then redeployed to Iraq for the Iraq war. I was there for 6 months and returned home for a year and then redeployed back to Iraq for a year deployment.

What do you do at ISS Solutions?
I work in the clinical engineering department, maintaining and servicing the hospital’s medical equipment.

Do the skills and knowledge you acquired while serving relate to your job today? If so, please tell us how!
The skills and knowledge I gained from the military have contributed to my job today. I learned to communicate with a diversity of people as well as being flexible with ever-changing situations. I also learned the value of teamwork, “it takes a team to accomplish a mission”. One skill that has really helped me in my job today is the ability to troubleshoot any issues that arise quickly. During my deployment in Iraq, I had to fix problems with communications equipment quickly or people could have died from not being able to communicate with each other.

What are your hobbies/what do you do for fun?
I love fishing, I have been fishing since I was 2 years old. Family is also important to me, and I enjoy being a husband and a father. I also enjoy serving in my local church, Providence Community Church in Spring Grove, PA.
